5 Places You Have to See in Estonia

Estonia may be one of the smallest countries in the world but it is also one of the most interesting holiday destinations. Some of the ways to enjoy your holiday in this charming country is to explore its capital, visit the outlying islands or appreciate nature in the national parks.

1. Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, possesses a wonderful fusion of the modern and the medieval. The Old Town area is known for its authentic Hanseatic architecture. Most of the cobblestone streets and buildings date back to as far as the 11th century. Many of them are still preserved in their original form. Whatever you are into - galleries, cafes and restaurants, cultural or musical scenes - there is something for you in Tallinn.

2. Hiiumaa is the second largest island in Estonia. In the winter, you can drive to Hiiumaa from the mainland by ice-road. Come to this island to enjoy nature and visit the beautiful lighthouses.

3. Ruhnu Island. Known as the Pearl of the Baltic, this island is home to two interesting sights - a giant chocolate bear statue and an ancient wooden church.

4. Matsalu National Park. This is a favourite destination for bird watchers. Come in the autumn to spot hundreds of migratory birds making a stopover. It is quite close to Tallinn.

5. Soomaa National Park. Also known as "land of bogs", this park is home to brown bears and golden eagles. Beautiful rare orchids also flourish here. Visit in spring and the park may be flooded from the winter snow thaw, making it perfect for canoeing!
